Ultra-cool Sci-Fi Revoltech Figures

Just a few weeks ago we welcomed a visit from the primary distributor of Sci-Fi REVOLTECH figures in Japan. He brought a few sample products including the REVOLTECH Alien Xenomorph and we were totally blown away. I mean totally.

Take a look at their Alien Warrior for instance. Isn't this like the most detailed figure you've ever seen!? It was quite unbelievable.

Kaiyodo - the leading, detail-obsessed Japanese figure manufacturer - is behind these figures by the way. No wonder they are so cool. They sure don't make any half-hearted efforts when it comes to figures.
If you've never heard the term REVOLTECH before it refers to several product lines utilizing Kaiyodo's revoltech joint system which allows unprecedented freedom of movement. Check out the crazy joint action on their REVOLTECH Batman for example. Almost every major joint on the body is reproduced with a bending range that mimics the real thing. They make these figures more posable than anything else we've seen so far.

The Sci-Fi REVOLTECH series features a mix of contemporary and classic characters from both Japanese and Western Sci-Fi movies and TV shows. Their selection is rather hodge-podge ranging from Jack Skellington from Tim Burton's A Nightmare Before Christmas to ancient cult creatures like Mothra, the rather benign monster moth who featured in sci-fi flicks next to Godzilla in the 1960s.

You are what your iPhone wears...

It's been about a year since I began reading all my books on the iPhone. Life has changed considerably since then. I no longer need to carry bulky paperbacks during my commutes. I can switch from reading my favorite novel of the moment to the New York Times in three flicks of my thumb. In short, things are a lot more convenient and a big thanks to Steve Jobs for that.

There are several things about the paper book that I miss dearly, however. And one of them is that I no longer have a way to show off what I'm reading to the rest of the world. I mean, I could be reading The Brothers Karamazov and the cute girl sitting opposite me on the train wouldn't have an inkling of how cool I am. That's somewhat of a downer for geeks like me who rely heavily on what we read - and not how we look - to trick members of the opposite sex into relinquishing their phone numbers.

Ah, but there's hope yet. Lately I've found a workaround for this problem, which is to dress up my iPhone with things that (kind of) express something about myself. I have several specific iPhone jackets for this purpose. One is a very geeky Star Wars case and the other is the Tony Tony Chopper iPhone cover pictured center here. I especially love the latter because it's kind of subtle. i.e., you couldn't tell straight off the bat that it's something from Portrait of Pirates. And on top of that the cherry blossoms on the jolly roger have a special significance (which I won't go into here but suffice to say that it's a symbolic prop in a very very touching episode involving Tony Tony and Dr. Hiruruku). So only people who've read the particular episode would know what it's about. It's just like a secret Mason's handshake designed to seek out those initiated into the inner circle of knowledge. Ah... if only there would be more otaku who'd understand...

Well, maybe not save the world but the Tenugui is one handy piece of cloth to keep in your bag.

Traditionally, the Tenugui was an everyday item people kept in their kimonos to wipe themselves with. The Japanese equivalent of a handkerchief. But because of its relatively large size many women also use it to wrap presents or everyday items such as lunch boxes. My favorite application for the tengui is the bottle wrap which I use to fashionably carry my wine to parties.

The younger Japanese generation use the tenugui more as a fashion item and sometimes even use it like a poster.

Next week we hope to visit one of our Tenugui manufacturers to take video footage of some useful wrapping techniques so stay tuned!

Samurai Insignia Cell Phone Straps and Tie Pins

Here are a few cool Titanium Cell Phone Straps for the samurai at heart. Each features the house insignia of a famous warlord from medieval Japan. Shown on the Titianium Tie Pins is the kanji character "愛" which adorned the helmet of Naoe Kanetsugu - a battle hardened feudal lord and advisor to the once powerful Uesugi Clan. Kanetsugu was very much respected both by his peers as well as his enemies and is considered to be one of the heroic characters in Japanese history. The character by itself symbolizes "love" in Japanese. It is not clear why Kanetsugu was attached to this particular word, but it is thought to have a dual purpose: One to remind him of the virtues of selfless love and compassion and the other to receive protection from Ragaraja (or 愛染明王 in Japanese) - a buddhist deity and god of war.

Each tie-pin is made of pure titanium - very light, strong, corrosion-resistant and non-allergenic material selectively used for high-tech mission critical products. A great item for student's of Japanese history and a welcome gift for Father's Day!

When we saw the real thing (the finished products) we were blown away by how beautiful they were and decided to sell them on the spot. These kits are incredibly detailed and just awesome to behold. Titanium kleptomaniac

A kleptomaniac is someone who is obsessed with collecting things. It's the word repeatedly came to my mind as I watched one of our staff members run around Tokyo like crazy, collecting any titanium product she thought was cool. I realize now that her mania was quite justified. Titanium, it turns out, is a very cool metal with some unique properties. It's amazingly light, strong and non-allergenic to boot. And if the surface is oxidized in a certain way, it starts to exhibit anti-bacterial qualities too. So we were informed through an hour-long lecture from the folks at HORIE Corporation who are leaders in titanium surface engineering. As you can see on their line of titanium mug cups these guys have perfected the art of bringing out awesome iridescent colors on the surface of Titanium without using any paint at all! Enough blabbering. Best seen with thine eyes.

These cute hair sticks were definitely made to kill. They take up a subtle position in your hair, but once discovered by an innocent onlooker - WhaBang! (Sound of onlooker biting the dust) They just can't help making a lasting impression.

Called "Kanzashi" in Japan, hair sticks have been an integral part of women's fashion since the Edo era. Naturally, it looks great with the kimono, but would also fit right in with modern clothing.

These ones are fashioned out of pure Titanium. Yes, I know that sounds a little over-kill for a mere hair stick, but the high-tech choice is not without cause. Titanium is very light and strong, having the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any metal. And it's non-allergenic so it would be a good choice for people with sensitive skin.

But I would simply get this just for the cool colors. You'd be surprised to know that the brilliant base color is not the effect of some pigment. The awesome iridescence is achieved with a thin layer of Titanium Oxide on the surface that is made to reflect light in a certain way. Very cool technology.

The beauty of Japanese lacquer revived with high-tech Titanium

Japanese lacquer is a dying art. Despite all its beauty and its hundreds of years of history behind it, the fact is that lacquer - or "urushi" as we call it - doesn't really appeal to the newer generation. Japanese lacquer products belong in museums and in your grand-dad's alcove. Looks good. But please keep it away from my modern, IKEA-furnished designer apartment.

That's how I felt until I saw the latest line of Titanium cups from Rhus. What caught me was their undeniably modern look despite the ancient Japanese motifs. The guys at Rhus told me each one is hand coated with layers and layers of authentic Japanese lacquer by seasoned artisans. It's a very painstaking process because the lacquer has to dry each time before a new layer is applied. And it takes a lot of experience to know exactly how the depth and color of the lacquer are going to come out in the end.

The beauty of lacquer lies in the subtle details. Let the light play on the surface and you'll find it's like an black ocean with rich, deep colors revealing themselves in almost unnoticeable variations.

And of course, the Titanium factor just makes it even cooler. Rhus selected the high-tech material because it doesn't rust, taste or smell. This is important if don't want the cup to interfere with the flavor of your drink. This is a piece of art that's really meant to be used and enjoyed every day. I'm not a big fan of impractical objects that are just meant to sit and look pretty, so I immediately took to this utilitarian aspect as well. In fact Rhus assures me that the color of the lacquer will change and mature over a period of many years. Hmmm. That's another level of appreciation to look forward to.

All in all, a great cup for those who love the traditional crafts.

There are some very fashionable members on the Jzool staff (alas, I am definitely not one of them) and they have really taken a liking to the the Clear Crea bags in our selection. Especially the ones in denim as it seems to have made a comeback on the streets of Tokyo. Also, I just want to take this occation to introduce a great vintage fashion website just started by one of our valued customers. I don't know about jigsaw enthusiasts around the world but the Japanese take their finished puzzles very seriously, frequently framing them and mounting them on their walls. Instead of just using this blog to give you product updates, we thought it might be good to give readers a glimpse of the stuff that Tokyo natives do in our day to day lives. Well, last weekend the Jzool staff including yours trully attended Rythm and Hope, an event to raise awareness for refugees around the world and mark World Refugee Day (June 20th). The event itself was very cool. I definitely came away with a increased understanding of the refugee situation in Japan. (Apparently Japan accepts over a thousand political refugees each year but many of them end up destitute because they don't have any means of supporting themselves.) The other good thing about the event was the unlimited supply of good food, good music and tequila. Also, lo and behold, I stumbled upon the Mottainai product booth quite by accident. If you don't know already Mottainai is a global campagin to promote the concept of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle headed by nobel lauriate Wangari Maathai. We actually have a lot of Mottainai products on Jzool if anybody's interested. At the booth I got my own Mottainai doggie bag - a very well designed portable leftover container you can take with you to restaurants in case you get more food than you can digest. If you've taken a look at our go section recently you would have found that a lot more products have been added.
